Water Heater Maintenance: Why you should flush your water heater regularly

To get the longest life out of your water heater, you should make a habit of flushing it regularly. Having a routine will keep your water warm, fresh and clean.

There are several important reasons for flushing your water heater a minimum of once per year. You’ll benefit in many ways from completing this simple task.

Let’s review the importance of flushing your hot water heater!

More efficiency

water heater maintenanceYour water heater will work much faster if its path is clear. Minerals like calcium and iron can build up inside your tank, which makes it more difficult for hot water to come through. In turn, your water will become harder and your energy bill will skyrocket! Flushing your hot water heater allows you to get warm water when you need it.

Fewer bills

Did you know your water heater has to work twice as hard if you don’t maintain it? You can keep a consistent monthly bill by flushing your water heater, whether it has a tank or not. Additionally, you won’t have to pay for as many repairs. Small jobs turn into bigger problems if you neglect to flush your water.

Longer life span

Your water heater will last longer if you flush it regularly. By eliminating sediments that build up in your water heater’s tank, parts of your heater won’t burn out as quickly. When you leave them in there for too long, your tank will crack and break. Without proper maintenance, you’ll need to replace your water heater much sooner.

Warranty protection

Manufacturers give customers warranties to protect them in the event that something goes wrong. However, the majority of warranties do not cover scale failure, which is caused by not flushing your heater. You will need proof of what went wrong, so you can skip the expensive repair costs.

Peace and quiet

When there’s buildup inside a water heater, you may hear popping, crackling or banging noises. If you leave it alone, it might stop on its own. However, this isn’t a good sign because it means the scale buildup has solidified inside the heater. Always flush and descale your heater as soon as it gets too loud for your liking!

How often should I flush my water heater?

The answer to this question varies from person to person. However, you should flush your water heater every six months on average.

If you have hard water with lots of mineral buildup, you should do so more often. Look for these signs of hard water:

  • Feeling a film on your hands after using the sink
  • Spots on glasses and silverware after washing
  • Odd scent

Those are only a few of the signs to look for in your water. There are many more to look out for and you should remain vigilant.

Some areas have harder water than others. Bigger cities tend to have more mineral buildup, so pay attention to your water and flush your heater as necessary!
