TIPS FOR CUTTING COSTS ON YOUR UTILITY BILL

Heating and cooling costs for homes and businesses are often hefty. Thankfully, there are ways to minimize these charges. At Lynn’s HVAC Winnipeg – Heating, Cooling, Sewer & Drain we want to help make your home or business more affordable to run. Our heating and cooling HVAC contractors in Winnipeg recommend the following to all our clients.

UPGRADE TO HIGH-EFFICIENCY APPLIANCES

High-efficiency furnaces and air conditioners are not only the most environmentally friendly choice to make, they’re also the more economically sound. If any of your appliances are 15 years of age or older, it’s time to make an upgrade. The smart money rests on purchasing systems that are 95% energy efficient or higher. Even though you’ll initially pay a bit more, you’ll more than recoup the loss within a year or two (you could save up to 20% on your utility bill).

REGULARLY MAINTAIN AND SERVICE YOUR HEATING AND COOLING SYSTEMS

Regardless if you’ve already made the turnover to new appliances or you’re not yet due to make the upgrade, the next best thing to do is keep on top of regular maintenance for heating and cooling systems. Your furnace and air conditioner should be professionally serviced annually to keep all functioning at peak levels. One step you can and should take yourself is to replace the filter on your furnace every couple of months. A clean filter will ensure your furnace runs as it should.

UPDATE YOUR INSULATION

No matter how adeptly your appliances run, if you have poor insulation within the structure you’re trying to heat or cool, your overall efficiency will be impacted. Adding insulation, especially in the attic, can drastically bump-up your building’s ability to retain the desired temperature.

A PROGRAMMABLE THERMOSTAT

Buying and using a programmable thermostat will ensure you’re never cooling or heating more than necessary. You can set it so that there’s no heating or cooling taking place while the space is unused but adjusts automatically to comfortable temperatures when you and others are expected to arrive.

GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS

The Canadian Government has several programs that offer thousands of dollars in incentives for energy saving upgrades such as sump pump and backwater valve installations. These incentives lower the initial cost of installation and will lower your overall utility bill.

Manitoba Hydro even offers a variety of loan and financing programs to help homeowners make energy efficiency upgrades to their homes. For example, if a resident were to buy and install a new furnace through an independent company such as Lynn’s, they could potentially pay for the furnace through a financing program with their Manitoba Hydro monthly billing. In this case residents could buy a $1200 new furnace and pay Manitoba Hydro monthly installments of $9.50 instead of paying for everything up front.

Be sure to check the Manitoba Hydro website for more energy incentives offered by the government.

OTHER QUICK TIPS

In addition to the above, the small everyday ways we use electricity can add up. Here are some additional tips for homes and businesses to cut utility costs.

  • Open drapes and blinds to let the sun naturally heat south-facing rooms. Close them to keep the same rooms cool.
  • Clean air vents, baseboards and radiators regularly
  • Unplug devices and equipment when they’re not in use
  • Upgrade lighting and use energy efficient bulbs whenever possible
  • Maintain your hot water tank so that you don’t burn excessive electricity heating water
