Common Ways a Furnace can Break and How to Prevent That

Furnaces may sound like simple pieces of equipment but there are actually a lot of ways that they can go wrong. For a furnace to adequately heat a property it must have good ventilation and air flow, in particular over the heat exchanger.

The reason for this is that when you fire up a furnace, the heat exchanger will, of course, heat up. The rate at which the heat exchanger should heat up, however, must be controlled. When things heat up they expand, and if the heat exchanger expands too rapidly it will crack. A broken heat exchanger will render the entire furnace inoperable, and may actually mean that the whole furnace needs replaced.

Almost all of the ways that a furnace can break come down to a damaged heat exchanger. If you don’t change the air filters often enough then they will get clogged, reducing air flow and leading to a cracked heat exchanger. If you cover the vents with clothing (perhaps to try and dry the clothing off quickly), then that too will impair air flow.

Clogged fans can also cause problems with your furnace, and make it less efficient, but again, failure tends to come down to a side-effect of the clogged fan being that the heating coil gets put under too much strain, and then fails.

Some homeowners are diligent about those things, and keep their filters fresh and their vents unobstructed, but still have problems. That can happen if you fail to keep the air ducts clean. Even with a filter, it is not uncommon for some dust to start to build up in the ducts, especially if you live in a dusty area. Regular cleaning should be a part of any service plan, to ensure that your furnace lasts for as long as possible.
