Winnipeg was for a long time not exactly been the focus of foodie culture. But it has always been a city of friendly locals and filled to the brim with that small town welcome that had people coming back again and again. However, now there’s another reason to visit. The dining scene in Winnipeg has undergone a Renaissance – and there are some fabulous destinations to try. anywhere else in North America! That’s a lot of delicious food!
If you are in Winnipeg and want some quality cuisine – here are some great dining options to try.
For a panoramic view and some exceptional views try out Prairie 360. The name may give a clue – this restaurant perches 30 story’s up and revolved at a stately pace to take in the entire cityscape. For those who simply want to watch the world go by the ‘Lounge 360’ (which is open Friday and Saturday evening) offers exclusive cocktails. There is no better way to unwind than an evening at this Sky Lounge. However, for those who want to experience great cuisine, there are lighter options such as the steak and frites for lunch or the dinner options which include ‘In the Sky Canard’ which is a pan-seared duck with creamy polenta. Add to this the white Balsamic and Pear gastrique, throw in some bacon and rosemary and you have a recipe that is close to perfection.
For a taste that will have those mouth buds tingling, head for The Magic Bird. This fried chicken is mouthwateringly good. It’s not high-end dining – but for sheer enjoyment, it beats those other chain store offerings hands down. This is comfort food taken to the next level. This Bird doesn’t mess around with the classics – just does them very, very well. Feed your inner chicken lover with dishes such as strips served with cheese sauce, bacon and pickled jalapeno – or go for your choice of chicken pieces. Go for a sandwich if you’d like – but don’t forget those sides – the devilled macaroni and cheese is fabulous – but the bread and butter pickles give that a run for its money. Not exactly health food – but a guilty and so delicious indulgence that begs for a second try. Ask for the in house hot sauce – it is incredible.
If you are in the mood for another style of indulgence then head to 529 Wellington. This is probably Winnipeg’s finest steakhouse. Do not expect the fittings of that chain ‘Good Old Cowboy’ venue. There may be steak on the menu – but this is fine dining. The beef here has been awarded the coveted ‘Canadian Prime distinction’ -which is received by only a minuscule amount of beef served in the country. The red wine list will make diners take notice – perhaps that is one of the reasons that the venue has received numerous fine dining awards including the ‘Open Table Diners Choice Award’ for 2018.
Whatever your choice; family friendly or fine dining Winnipeg has so much to offer. Book a table at one of the dining destinations here – or take away and enjoy. You will not be disappointed.
